I failed the 8th grade - Music Lessons, IQ and Academic Skills

I’ve read a lot of studies about the correlation between music lessons and grades. I am living proof of this correlation. I failed the 8th grade. I had poor focus, I hated math, English and almost every other school subject. I took music lessons beginning at the age of 12 and continued until I was 17. In my first year of college I was on the Dean’s list with a 3.8 GPA.

What happened? Really I can only guess. I discovered music, music theory, I developed a deeper understand of music. I began to be fascinated by astronomy, the Greek philosophers, poetry and I’d spend hours in the library reading by the time I was 18. I flunked Spanish in 9th grade but later taught myself Spanish and I’m fairly fluent now. Was it music that helped me academically?

Organized music lessons seem to boost IQ and academic performance. The longer that lessons continue, the more impact the lessons have on IQ. This is according to a study published in the May issue of the Journal of Educational Psychology (Vol. 98, No. 2).

Lead researcher E. Glenn Schellenberg, PhD, published research where 6 year olds who were given music instruction in voice or piano showed a larger increase in IQ than a control group who waited a year to take music lessons.

Schellenberg then asked himself, "Would the effect get bigger with more than a year of lessons?" His most recent work and subsequent studies absolutely confirms that it does. "There is dose-response association," says Schellenberg, who confirms that the longer a child takes music lessons, the higher their IQ and academic skills.
